Each youth athlete in our program will receive proper training according to our technical development methodology. Based on each youth athlete’s experience, competency, and stage of development, the player is encouraged and directed to enroll in the proper training program. The Lacrosse Academy offers a unique and powerful approach that integrates the components of physical literacy (performance, weight, and speed/agility training) with technical lacrosse skills sessions that introduce and emphasize stick techniques, positional play and movements, and time and space management. Various learning environments such as full-field, small-sided field, and indoor/box settings, are all used to elevate game IQ.

Coach, player, and parent collaboratively monitor development and synchronize advancement with developmental performance. Mastery before progression is the fundamental precept in advancing to more difficult and complex movements, skills, and activities. Because gross motor skills must be developed before fine motor skills, youth athletes should demonstrate age-appropriate competency in athletic movement before attempting more complex object control skills. Players participate in various RADDSport teams, leagues, and/or tournaments based on their camp, clinic, or program enrollment.

FIRST STEPS

First Steps Lacrosse is an early childhood physical literacy program that teaches fundamental movements prominent in the game of lacrosse. First Steps was collaboratively developed by early childhood development specialists in conjunction with the Montessori School, American Box Lacrosse Association, and USA Lacrosse. First Steps is also part of the TryLax introductory program developed by USA Lacrosse, the sport’s governing body.

Utilizing dramatic play and a child-centered approach, First Steps is structured as a multi-session positive learning experience for kids and their moms and is designed to build physical literacy, self-esteem, and confidence. The program begins with each child using pool noodles to simulate and replicate the throwing motion with a lacrosse stick. Using the noodle to make contact, balloons are then used to introduce catching techniques to anticipate, predict direction, and intercept ball trajectories.

The ball and stick are then presented, and they begin to integrate the basic skills and learn to “cradle” by rocking the ball back and forth in the stick. Motion and movement are added from walking to jogging and then running. Ball rolling and bouncing are used to enhance interception skills.

First Steps is offered once a quarter. The program consists of 2 sessions per week for 6 weeks.
